Chapter Ten

PRISHA PATEL WAS NOT KNOWN for holding back, but this time there was definitely a mocking tone in her voice. “You’re kidding me,” Prisha laughed down the phone. “You’ve been sorting through that jumble that Lucien calls a shop for four whole hours and you still haven’t found the magical clue you’re looking for?”

Erin stepped back from the over-stocked bookshelves in Lucien’s shop and sighed out loud. “If only. I have flicked open every book I could find to see if Lucien had stashed any papers inside and Matt has looked behind all of the pictures in the place. Not a thing.”

She absentmindedly picked up a catalogue for a London auction house from 1983 and slid it back on the shelf where she had found it crushed between faded Victorian poetry books and sea charts of the South Atlantic. “The only good news is that Lucien’s office has never been so tidy. The shelves have been dusted and even his invoices and receipts are neatly stacked into date order.”

“Well, that would be a first.” Prisha coughed. “Remember that time he paid us pocket money to organize his filing? That was danger money with a difference. I’m still recovering from the trauma. There’s must be twenty years’ worth of records stashed under that desk.”

“Tell me about it.” Erin coughed as she waved away a cloud of dust with one hand. “The perfect place to hide something important is in plain view among stacks of yellow paper going back to when I was wearing pigtails and playing with dolls. Matt did a great job, but I never want to see a receipt for an antiquarian book again.”

Then Erin held the phone away from her ears as a child started screaming down the line.

“Now Raj,” she heard Prisha call out. “The cat does not like having his tail pulled. No, she’s not a toy.” The sound of wailing and shrieks from a cat and several children immediately followed. “Sorry Erin,” Prisha said. “The cousins are here, and I’m supposed to be entertaining them while mum cooks dinner. Call me later! Bye for now.”

Erin closed down her cell phone, stepped back into Lucien’s office and collapsed down on his comfortable leather chair. She pinched the bridge of her nose and blinked hard to try and clear her head.

She knew that there was something she was missing, and it was incredibly annoying, but she couldn’t think what it could be.

She scanned the small office area. Every shelf and box file had been checked for photographs, letters, anything at all that could be linked to Olga and Rupert. And not one thing stood out.

Their first task had been to move the three small exhibit tables into the centre of the room, exposing the shelving and storage units. It was amazing how big the shop suddenly became, much bigger than the deli, even though the houses were about the same size. Of course, that made sense since Lucien had not created space for a professional kitchen.
